The hair follicle, long the exclusive playground of microscopists, has recently come under the scrutiny of molecular geneticists. This comes as no surprise, as many aspects of cell life and death are easily accessible in the hair follicle and congenital disorders of hair growth and differentiation - often poignantly - illustrate the patho-biological consequences of defects in the intricate mechanisms regulating hair growth. All this attention has resulted in many exciting new insights into the functioning of the hair follicle.
